The harsh winds and bitter temperatures of the winter season can take a serious toll on our lips, leaving them dry, chapped and sore. Subject to personal preference, the lips can be one of the most aesthetically pleasing features on our faces, if someone isn’t looking into our eyes they are most definitely looking at our lips!
As an extension of our skin, the lips also require a healthy routine in order to keep dryness (and everything that comes with it) at bay. In a quest to help the world achieve a luscious, kissable, chap-free pout, we have outlined the perfect winter lip care routine for you to try this holiday season!
Fun Fact:
Our lips have a natural pinkish rosy hue. This is because they have fewer cell layers than our skin, so we’re able to see the blood vessels underneath which gives the lips its natural colour!
Step one: Exfoliate with a lip scrub.
To diminish signs of chapping and cracking you need to exfoliate those lips! Buff away dry, dead skin cells using a gentle lip scrub no more than three times a week. Like our skin, we can also over exfoliate the lips which can leave them raw, sensitive and can even lead to bleeding.
Tip: Try a cinnamon and coconut oil lip scrub for instantly smooth, plumper lips. Cinnamon is known to improve blood circulation so using it as a lip scrub will help to diminish fine lines and give you a fuller pout!
Step two: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Our lips do not contain oil glands (also known as sebaceous glands) meaning they don’t readily produce oil like our skin does. This makes the lips more prone to dryness, chapping and cracking. To avoid this, it is important to keep hydrated internally by drinking water and consuming hydrating foods with high water content such as melons, strawberries and cucumbers.
Tip: Try an overnight coconut oil lip mask for a deeply hydrated pout in the morning!
Step three: Protect and moisturise.
The third and most important step in your lip-care routine is to protect and moisturise the fresh layer of skin you’ve just revealed from exfoliating. The structure of our lips is slightly different to the structure of the skin on our body. While the skin on our face can be up to 16 cell layers thick, our lips are only 3-5 layers thick. This makes them thinner than other areas on our body and more fragile in cold weather. Ingredients such as shea butter and beeswax help to moisturise and protect the lips from harsh elements. They contain humectant and emollient properties that draw moisture to the lips and lock it in by creating a protective layer.
You can find these magical properties in our New Organic and Fairtrade Lip Balms for smooth, nourished, chap-free lips. We’ve carefully curated nature’s finest ingredients to give your lips a protective barrier against environmental damage, making it a winning addition to your winter lip-care routine. MUMANU Lip Balms will give you the perfect pout without compromising your ethics.
I received my goods yesterday and I was going to wait a few days (maybe even weeks) for results before I reviewed the products but can I just say after using the lip balm for just one day. I have awoken with soft uncracked lips for the first time EVER and for me that is a win especially in these times sleeping with the heat on.
